2018. 10. 11 | The LORD Reigns (Psalm 99:1~9)         Speakers Dave Paek

1 Psalm 99 The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake.
2 Great is the LORD in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name -- he is holy.
4 The King is mighty, he loves justice -- you have established equity; in Jacob you have done what is just and right.
5 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel was among those who called on his name; they called on the LORD and he answered them.
7 He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud; they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them.
8 O LORD our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds.
9 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy.

Reflection

Exalt the LORD (99:1–5)

The King of Zion is described as great, mighty, just, and holy. The LORD reigns from heaven, where He is enthroned between angelic creatures of majesty. The earth and the nations are His footstool, and they must tremble before Him and praise His holy name. He has chosen Israel to be His special people and has given them His law, for He is a God of justice who always does what is right. God demonstrates His love to His people by instructing them on how to live, and we show our love by obeying and honoring Him. His people are called to exalt the king who is LORD over us all.

How do you exalt the LORD in your daily life? Which of His commands is He calling you to obey today?

Mediators of Grace (99:6–9)

Some of the great leaders of Israel’s history, like Moses, Aaron, and Samuel called upon the LORD, and He answered them in miraculous ways. Although many generations of Israelites failed to follow God’s commands, they had mediators who confessed the nation’s sin and taught them to obey. Because He is holy and has called them His own, the LORD forgave them while also disciplining them for their misdeeds. His holiness and love are fully realized in our priest and mediator, Jesus Christ, who laid down His life to demonstrate the justice and mercy of God. Because of Him, we are forgiven and accepted as God’s children. Our lives should therefore overflow with grateful praise and exaltation to the God who forgives and disciplines His people.

How have the pastors and teachers in your church helped you to become like Christ? How do you respond to their instruction and guidance?

A letter to God

Lord, I praise You for Your greatness and glory. May my life reflect how worthy You are of my praise and obedience. Help me to submit to Your discipline and be grateful for Your grace. In Your name. Amen.
