2018. 10. 10 | Joyful Praise (Psalm 98:1~9)         Speakers Dave Paek

1 Psalm 98 A psalm. Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
2 The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations.
3 He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
4 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music;
5 make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing,
6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn -- shout for joy before the LORD, the King.
7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.
8 Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy;
9 let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.

Reflection

Celebrate His Faithfulness (98:1–3)

The LORD has done marvelous things, so the psalmist invites God’s people to sing a new song to Him in celebration of His faithfulness. God has been faithful to the Israelites throughout their history. His right hand and His holy arm, symbols of His warrior-like power, have repeatedly performed mighty acts of deliverance on their behalf. Through Israel, God has made his salvation known and revealed His righteousness to the nations. God was under no obligation to the Israelites, but it was His will to make Abraham’s descendants into a nation and place Himself in covenant relationship with them. Although we sometimes fail to fulfill our responsibilities, the LORD remains loyal and faithful to us. May we celebrate His faithfulness and aim to become more like Him each day.

How has God demonstrated His faithfulness to you? How can you praise Him and celebrate His faithfulness?

Sing and Shout for Joy (98:4–9)

In these verses, the psalmist encourages the entire earth to shout for joy to the LORD and to make music to Him with songs and various instruments. All of creation erupts with praise at the prospect of God’s just rule. The sea resounds and everything in it; the rivers clap their hands, and the mountains sing together for joy. The earth and all who live in it are overjoyed that the LORD’s judgment is coming, for He will judge with righteousness and equity. Wickedness will not go unpunished, and God will judge every individual fairly. As those who have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior and are covered by His righteousness, we can praise God and anticipate His coming rule with joy.

What in particular about God’s just rule makes you want to shout for joy? How can you express wholehearted praise to Him today?

A letter to God

Faithful God, thank you for Your faithfulness in the face of my faithlessness. Your covenant-keeping character is the foundation of my security. May my life be marked by joyful praise as I celebrate who You are, what You have done, and what You will do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
